Orava stonework

Orava stonework
An exposition of Orava stonemasonry has been located in the lapidaries on the exterior of the church since 1973.

Statues and reliefs of saints made of stone have been preserved in their original places to this day. We can find them in small chapels and pillars along the roads, in Calvary, cemeteries and village churches. Believers "updated" these statues in a modern spirit, painted them with vivid colors and decorated them with crowns and paper flowers on festive occasions. Their worship and display pursued the goal of protecting their own health, dwelling from fire, and should also ensure abundance and fertility. These reliefs and sculptures came from the workshops of local stonemasons, which are documented in documents from the 18th and 19th centuries in western Slovakia, around Piešťany and in northern Slovakia in the Orava region.
